Verity by Collen Hoover- A Book Review

NIKITHA ANTO

Collen Hoover, is an American author who mostly writes romantic novels. She is best known for her 2016 novel, It Ends With Us. Later, Collen Hoover tried her hand at writing a psychological thriller. As a result, the book “verity” was published in the year 2018.

The story starts with a young writer Lowen Ashleigh. She is a not-so-famous author and hence she was struggling financially. She was in the verge of a financial breakdown when she is gets an offer to write the remaining books for the famous author “Verity”. She meets Jeremy Crawford, Verity’s husband, who convinces her to accept the offer and he also invites her to stay at their house until she finishes the books. Verity had met with a major accident and was in a coma, she had written many scripts which was stored in her library. Lowen, while at her stay in the house finds an unpublished copy of an autobiography written by Verity herself. After she starts to read it, she is shocked by what she had found. Verity had written about the gruesome things that she had done to her family because of her selfish love towards her husband. The book also contains titbits of the budding romance between Lowen and Jermey. The novel is filled with unexpected twists and in the end, it is left to the readers to draw their own conclusions.

Most of the reviews on ‘goodreads.com’ talked about how the readers kept reading and hence could not sleep because they were curious as to where the story was going. Honestly, I cannot deny it, I too stayed up all night reading it. I could not get myself to put the book down. Fair share of warning to the readers, the book is unsettling and hence I would advise everyone to avoid reading at night. I swear to God, I dreamt of Verity when I finally slept. The gruesome and violent scenes in the book was written in in-depth detail which makes the book even more traumatising. Trust me no one can guess where the story is going at any given point. I am still confused as to what actually happens in the end. As its an open-ended novel I fell into the pit of unending and unanswerable questions. I even found myself joining the ‘Verity discussion group’ on Facebook because I really wanted to know what other people thought about it. Its not a bad book, all I can say is that it will leave you in a trance.

PS: After you have read the novel, let me know, if you are team manuscript or team letter. ∎
