Suicide bombing outside Afghanistan's foreign ministry causes heavy casualties
On 11 January 2023, a suicide bombing attack took place outside the ministry of foreign affairs in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Kabul's police spokesperson, Khalid Zadran, said that the attack took place in Kabul's diplomatic district, Zanbaq Square at around 4 p.m. local time. Several countries, such as China and Turkey, have their embassies in this area.
Zandra confirmed that atleast five people had died due to the attack. Though, he didn't confirm the number of those injured, it was reported by the humanitarian organization Emergency that it's surgical center had 40 patients admitted following the attack.
The responsibility of the explosion was claimed by ISIS' local affiliate, ISIS-K. They claim it was a suicide bomb attack. Their Amaq news agency claim the attack killed 20 people without providing evidence.
This attack was condemned by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. In a tweet, they wrote, "Violence is not part of any solution to bring lasting peace to Afghanistan."
Ever since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021, there have been a chain of attacks in Kabul that have claimed multiple lives. In December, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack that took place in Kabul's Longan Hotel, this attack killed multiple people and left several injured. In September, six people including two Russian Embassy employees were killed in a suicide bombing in near the Russian Embassy.
These attacks indicate great deterioration in security in the country's capital.
