Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on August 14 th 2023, Monday announced that the
National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 will be withdrawn from the State’s higher education
institutions from the next academic year (2024-2025). He was addressing during a meeting
at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office on Monday.
Siddaramaiah said that the NEP implemented by the previous BJP government will be
completely abolished from the next academic year, while it is set to continue for the current
academic year.
̎The Chief Minister said, ̎NEP has to be abolished after making some necessary preparations.
There was no for preparations this year. By the time the elections results came in and the
government was formed, the new academic year already started. This year NEP will be
continued as it should not cause trouble to the students in the middle of an academic year ̎.
The Congress leader added, ̎NEP is simultaneously opposed by students, parents, lecturers
and teachers. The BJP has sacrificed the interest of the students in the country by
implementing NEP for first time in the state without the consent of the people and without
applying it in the country ̎.
Previously, BJP state government had implemented NEP in Karnataka in 2021. Karnataka
was the first state in the country to adopt NEP in higher institutions. However, during this
year’s state assembly polls, the Congress had promised to scrap out the NEP after coming to
power. It also dubbed the NEP as the Nagpur Education Policy in pointing out reference to
the RSS Headquarters.
Higher Education Minister, MC Sudhakar directed the Board of Studies in all state
universities to prepare the syllabus only till fifth and sixth semesters in an effort to remove
the four-year honours degree. As per NEP, three-year undergraduate degree programmes
will be extended to four years as honours degree.
The Congress government also proposed to plan a committee soon with representatives
from schools and higher education departments to come up with a State Education Policy to
Karnataka.
