On Friday, a massive explosion hit a gas pipeline owned by the company, Amber Grid, that connects Lithuania and Latvia. The explosion occurred in the Pasvalys region of northern Lithuania near the Latvian border.
Though, images broadcasted by local media show the sky engulfed in the fire caused by the explosion. The officials report there were no injuries caused due to the explosions and Amber Grid confirmed the blast occurred away from the residential areas. The fire subsided after four hours.
Latvia's Defence Minister, Inara Murniece, on Twitter wrote that the explosion will be investigated and sabotage could not be ruled out.
Amber Grid chief executive, Nemunas Biknius, confirmed that according to the assessment they "do not see any malign cause" and said that there was no evidence of an attack from the outside. He confirmed that the investigation will still go on.
Biknius said the pipeline had undergone some recent maintenance work but didn't elaborate on whether that caused the explosion.
The pipeline had a parallel system, Amber Grid said that the explosion occurred in one of them. They confirmed the other was undamaged.
