California, USA, saw another tragedy as a man shot seven people dead

California, USA, saw another tragedy on January 24 as a man shot seven people dead. This mass shooting occurred in the coastal city of Half Moon Bay.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, a mass shooting is defined as four or more people injured or killed, and the Half Moon Bay attack is the 37th mass shooting in the last 24 days.

The victims of the attack were all Chinese-American farmworkers and suspect, Zhao Chunli's, former co-workers. He, 67, was arrested on camera after he drove to the local police station. Out of the seven victims, four were discovered at a mushroom farm while three were later found at a nearby trucking business. There was also an eighth victim who is currently in critical condition at the hospital. San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said that the attack was witnessed by the schoolchildren living on the rural property. Further saying, "For children to witness this is unspeakable."

On the arrest, Sheriff Corpus mentioned that Chunli was found with a semi-automatic pistol that may have been used in the attack, and was co-operating with police.

The Associated Press news agency was told by San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President Dave Pine that a "disgruntled worker" committed the attacks.

In a statement, Mr. Pine said, "We are sickened by today's tragedy in Half Moon Bay". Further saying, "There are simply too many guns in this country and there has to be a change."

According to California Governor Gavin Newsom's tweet, he was pulled away to be briefed about the second attack while being at a hospital meeting with victims of the earlier mass shooting. He described it as "tragedy upon tragedy". ∎
